This city was the third capital of Wallachia, the former region of the romanian country, after Campulung and Curtea de Arges. Then came Bucarest as the capital, Constatin Brancoveanu change it during his reign (S. XVII - XVIII).
It was the place where Vlad Tepes had his capital in Romania during his reign, there we can visit the Royal Court (Curtea Domnească), with the wonderful Chindia tower. He also built his new palace in Bucarest (the famous Curtea Veche).
Targoviste was the place of the execution for Nicolae Ceaucescu and Elena, his wife.
